SUBJECT:

DAVIS-BESSE NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNIT NO.1 - REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION RELATED TO INSERVICE PUMP AND VALVE TESTING (TAC NO. MF0537)(L-13-067)

Dear Mr. Ueb:

By letter dated February 27, 2013 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML13059A321), FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC),

(the licensee) submitted a request for relief pursuant to Section 50.55a(a)(3)(ii) to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) for the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station, Unit NO.1.

Specifically, the licensee has requested to perform comprehensive test of high pressure injection pumps each refueling outage in lieu of biennially, and reclassify the pumps from Group B to Group A in order to include vibration test requirements during the quarterly pump tests.

The NRC staff is reviewing your submittal and has determined that additional information is required to complete the review. The specific information requested is addressed in the enclosure to this letter. During a discussion with Mr. Phil Lashley of your staff on [INSERT DATE], 2013, it was agreed that you would provide a response within 30 days from the date of this letter.

The NRC staff considers that timely responses to requests for additional information help ensure sufficient time is available for staff review and contribute toward the NRC=s goal of efficient and effective use of staff resources. If circumstances result in the need to revise the requested response date, please contact me at (301) 415-2315.

Sincerely, t RAt Eva A. Brown, Senior Project Manager Plant Licensing Branch 111-2 Division of Operating Reactor Licensing Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Docket No. 50-346

It is stated in Section 7 that a similar relief request was authorized by the NRC for the third 1 a-year inservice testing interval at Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station, Unit 1. Provide actual time frequency (months) of each refueling outage at which the comprehensive testing of the high pressure injection pumps was performed during the third 1 a-year inservice testing interval.
