Dear Mr. Laifer:
I am writing in response to your letter to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) dated August 13, 2013, regarding the Indian Point Health and Safety Resolutions for the County of Putnam, Town of Philipstown, and Village of Cold Spring, New York, and your request to extend the emergency evacuation zone for the Indian Point Energy Center from 10 to 50 miles. As part of the NRCs review of lessons learned from the Fukushima event, the NRC staff determined that there was no immediate information to suggest that the NRCs existing basis for emergency evacuation zone size was inadequate. However, NRC is committed to continue its review of emergency evacuation zone size as additional insights are gained from Fukushima studies.
The NRC shares your commitment for public health and safety.
Sincerely,
/RA/
Robert J. Lewis, Director Division of Preparedness and Response Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response
