RE: CGS BA/EFH I wanted to update you on the status of the CGS BA/EFH.
I am trying to put a new version out on the Bellefonte site in case you wanted to check to make sure some progress was being made, but we seem to be having upload problems.
We were having the same problem last week and it turned out it was the PNNL Collaborations group rather than the EARRTH site. So I suspect that this is what is going on now too. But I'm having someone check that out now - I should be able to get it on the site later today, and if not we can look at other options.
I pretty much have all the info in the document that I think I need - but I am currently Making another pass through the document to make sure the story flows - especially i regards to temperatures and velocities of water that the various stages of the various races of the various species of salmonids can tolerate (you get the picture...it's complicated).
Checking reference holes since some of my initial references are high-level (ex. Wydosli and Whitney- "Inland Fishes of Washington" ) and I'm trying to get as much "region-specific" info as I can (technical reports/journal articles) because there are variations in behavior based on region of their range, habitat etc. (you will see I have notes to myself in the margins related to the references).
Filling in the reference list.
Completing the ESA conclusions.
Filing in the blanks on the EFH analysis (based on what we had in an earlier draft of the EIS, while waiting on the draft from the editors).
Nailing down numbers on some of the runs - specifically the spring/summer Chinook and the coho. I think I have the fall Chinook, bull trout and steelhead fairly good, although I need to update the numbers on the steelhead counts if possible.
Nailing down the figures/graphics Fix section/figure/table numbers Removing the passive voice Other things I think we need to do I'd like to run the sections by a few of my peers that have more experience on the specific species to make sure that I haven't missed something - or worse yet, misrepresented something We need to decide if I've gone overboard on the details. Right now it is about 40 pages long and your examples of EFHs (link you sent yesterday) were much shorter (although granted my EFH section is shorter than my Life History sections). And the life history example of salmonids in Appendix A of Amendment 14 (Chapter 2 EFH descriptions) of the Pacific Coast Salmon Plan is really long. http://www.pcouncil.ore/salmon/fishery-ma nagement-pla n/adopteda pproved-amendments/amendment-14-to-the-pacific-coast t salmon-plan-1997/
I think it would be worthwhile for the two of us to call Rich Domingue (if we can) and the FWS contact, whose name is eluding me at the moment, to talk through the EFH sections/BA sections to make sure that we are on the same track they think we should be on. Amanda said this type of interaction has been very helpful in the past on other EISs. I've not had this type of conversation with the resource agencies at this stage before, but I think it would be particularly helpful in this case - especially with NMFS and especially with the coho.
What do you think? Have you ever had that extra step in the development of a BA?

CGS BA/EFH Dennis -
I placed the draft BA/EFH here - http://earrth.pnl.gov/Site%20Documents/COL%2OSites/Bellefonte/26%/20BAs/BA-EFH%20CGS.docx You can click on the link or you can navigate to ESP/COL sites - > Bellefonte -> COL Docs -> 26 BA. I will probably only keep it here for a few days and then remove it.
This is an early draft. When you get back from vacation I should be all done. As always if you have suggi think I'm off track, be sure to let me know.
I amenjoying writing this more than I have almost any other document I've worked on in the last few yea most of the subjects live in my backyard (so to speak).
