SUMMARY
OF PUBLIC SCOPING MEETINGS CONDUCTED RELATED TO THE REVIEW OF THE PROPOSED SHINE MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES, INC. RADIOISOTOPE PRODUCTION FACILITY The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff conducted environmental seeping meetings related to the review of the proposed SHINE Medical Technologies, Inc. (SHINE) radioisotope production facility. SHINE submitted its construction permit application to the NRC by letters dated March 26, 2013 and May 31, 2013. Two public meetings were conducted on July 17, 2013, at the Rotary Botanical Gardens in Janesville, Wisconsin. Approximately 60 people attended the meetings. The attendees included members of the NRC staff, members of the public, representatives from SHINE, news media, and local, State, and Federal government officials. Public comments and questions expressed ideas related to both the benefits and disadvantages of constructing and operating the new facility. Concerns were mainly based on the potential radiological exposure to the public, potential accidents, groundwater contamination, and alternative sites.
A combined listing of attendees for both sessions is provided in Enclosure 1. Enclosure 2 is a copy of the meeting agenda. Enclosures 3 and 4 contain the official corrected transcripts for the afternoon and evening meetings, respectively. Enclosure 5 contains a copy of the slides used during the NRC's presentation.
