September 26, 2013 John Pearson, MD Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility Joint Task Force on Nuclear Power 812 SW Washington Street, Suite 1050 Portland, OR 97205

Dear Dr. Pearson:

On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I am responding to your letter dated July 19, 2013, in which you expressed concerns regarding potential earthquake hazards at the Columbia Generating Station (CGS). Thank you for sharing your concerns. As my travel and schedule permits, I will consider your open invitation. I also encourage you to share your views with our staff at public meetings regarding seismic hazards or the operation of CGS. You can access the schedule for public meetings on the NRCs website at http://meetings.nrc.gov/pmns/mtg.

The NRC continues to conclude that CGS has been designed, built, and operated to safely withstand earthquakes likely to occur in its region. As part of our post-Fukushima lessons-learned activities, the NRC is requiring all licensees to reevaluate seismic hazards at their sites. To this end, on March 12, 2012, the NRC issued a request for information under Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Section 50.54(f) (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession No. ML12053A340). CGS is one of the plants in the western United States, and, as such, the seismic hazard revaluation for this plant is due by March 12, 2015. To the extent that your letter provides new and significant information, the NRC will ensure CGS takes such information into account as the licensee reevaluates its seismic hazard.

You may find more information on CGSs implementation of lessons-learned from Fukushima on the NRCs public website at http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/operating/ops-experience/japan/plants/wash2.html.

On behalf of the NRC, I appreciate your time and attention in reaching out to me to share your views on this matter.

Sincerely,

/RA/

Allison M. Macfarlane
