Description:

A visual inspection of an approx. 4 ft length of SW return line 463 in the 22 MT moat area (at the north curb wall) was performed. Coating degradation (including cracking, delamination, localized separation from the pipe OD) was evident along the entire length of the exposed piping, with surface corrosion at the areas of coating separation. This was an opportunistic buried piping inspection performed by the Underground Piping & Tank program owner during excavation in the 22 MT moat

. This portion of SW piping is downstream of the EDG SW FCVs, and is non-code piping.

Immediate Action

Description:

Discussed with Code Programs & E-FIN supervisor, wrote CR.

Suggested Action

Description:

Remove coating on SW line, prep piping for performing surface UTs to determine wall thickness.

Recommend site CoatingslE-FIN engineer also perform inspection of piping and provide coating repair recommendation.

See sub-response.

Subresponse :

The excavated piping SW line 463 was also subsequently inspected by the E-FIN/coatings engineer. Based on observations of similar (but to a lesser degree), indications of degraded coating on adjacent 8-inch city water Line 1502 and 8-inch HP fire protection lines , this investigation was expanded to include all three 8-inch lines. The piping areas having degraded coating were cleaned and prepped (coating and rough scale removed down to bare metal) for direct UT to verify wall thickness under WO #s 315720-09 & 315720-10. The UT results for ave. wall thickness were all SAT (greater than 87.5% of nominal wall) .

UT report 1P2-UT-12-030 (includes UT for the 8-inch fire protection and 8-inch city water line 1502 at areas of degraded coating) is attached to this response. The piping was subsequently recoated to current requirements under WO # 315720-1) ,

and backfilled with soil.

The results of the visual and UT inspections of this excavated piping, will be captured in Underground Piping and Tank program and trended per program requirements. This CA may be closed without further actions .
