FW: Closeout of Y020120062 -NRR Review of Draft NUREG/CR-XXXX, Entitled, Ultrasonic Phased Array Assessment of the Interface Fit and Leak Path of the North Anna Unit 2 Control Rod Drive Mechanism Nozzle 63 with Destructive Validation (TAC ME8193)

Importance: High I apologize for taking the full two months on this item. Recent activities during this outage season (North Anna) have consumed much of my time 1 would like to thank you both again for this work. As noted by the previous industry requests, I think it will provide a good bit of clarification for our inspectors and licensees to interpret these scans. As well, it will provide me a tool to ensure the mockups made by industry meet the field conditions.

As a heads up, and part of the issues consuming my time this past month, two plants with RPV upper heads at cold leg temperatures found indications of PWSCC this outage season. Braidwood 1 found indications in one penetration nozzle. Shearon Harris found multiple indications in four different penetration nozzles. The Harris licensee thought their upper head was so immune that they did not even have a repair plan relief request in house prior to the outage. The volumetric leak path assessment is one of our only methods to verify these cold head plants (with long periods between volumetric inspections) do not have problems with their J-groove welds.

Which brings us to the last component remaining of Nozzle 63, the J-groove weld and associated nozzle. If you think some funding may be available, I can work with Greg over the summer to generate a fiscally responsible and prioritized plan for this item. Or next year... or the year after that...

Once again, thank you, and sorry for the delay.
