SUMMARY
OF VISIT TO TENNESSEE STATE HISTORIC PRESERVATION OFFICE On April 11 th, 2013, I met with Dr. Joe Garrison of the Tennessee Historical Commission to discuss the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC's) environmental review of Tennessee Valley Authority's application to renew the operating license of Sequoyah Nuclear Plant (SON).
The scope of the environmental review was discussed with Dr. Garrison, as well as the NRC's coordination of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 process with its National Environmental Policy Act review, per Title 36 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 800. We discussed the boundaries of the undertaking, the types of cultural resources found on the SON site, and reviewed a topographical map that encompassed the area of potential effect (APE). I was advised to contact Suzanne Hoyal of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation's Division of Archaeology to perform a site file query for cultural resources within the APE. Dr. Garrison also suggested contacting two groups with a possible interest in the undertaking: the Eastern Tennessee Historical Society and the Tennessee Historical Society. At the time of this meeting, Dr. Garrison did not express concerns that the proposed renewal would adversely affect any historic properties in accordance with Section 106 of the NHPA Subsequent to this meeting, Suzanne Hoyal has been contacted in regards to a site file query and has provided the NRC with the relevant files. Letters to the Eastern Tennessee Historical Society and the Tennessee Historical Society are in the process of being generated.
