SUBJECT:

Vermont Yankee Evacuation Planning Evacuation Planning Zone Funding Public Hearings

Dear Ms. MacFarlane:

As members of the Swift River School Committee representing the communities of Wendell and New Salem, Massachusetts, we are concerned about the proximity of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Reactor to our elementary school.

The Swift River School is only 16 miles from the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant and in light of facts surrounding the Fukushima disaster, we feel that the present EPZ must be reevaluated and appropriate changes made to provide for the safety of our children in the event of a nuclear emergency.

As you know, at the time of the Fukushima meltdown our government recommended that all U.S. Nationals in Japan evacuate at least 50 miles from Fukushima. The Vermont Yankee plant is of the same generation and design as the Fukushima plant, and yet, the Evacuation Planning Zone for the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Reactor is a mere 10 miles. This means that communities outside of the 10 miles receive no assistance in creating emergency response plans, and are thus left to their own devices without benefit of government expertise and support.

As a community only 16 miles away from the Vermont reactor, we believe that the present designation is inadequate. In light of our government's response to the disaster in Japan, it seems prudent to expand our own EPZ to 50 miles. Such an expansion would better reflect the NRC's concern for the safety of its citizens. It

would also help to arm small communities such as ours with the knowledge and "

support necessary to create effective emergency response plans.

We are asking that the NRC expand the EPZ from 10 to 50 miles, conduct public hearings for the benefit of community members involved, and make funds available for those community members to institute safety measures they deem necessary.

Sincerely, Michael Yohan, Chair Swift River School Committee Erving School Union #28 assures that all programs, activities and employment opportunities are offered without regard to race, color, gender identity, age, creed, homelessness, religion, national origin, sexual orientation and disability.

Ralph C. Mahar Regional School District Orange Elementary School District Petersham Elementary School District Consolidated Central Offices Michael R. Baldassarre Superintendent January 8, 2013 US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555-0001 To Whom This May Concern:

This letter shall serve to inform you that the Ralph C. Mahar Regional, Petersham Elementary, and Orange Elementary School Committees have concerns with the proximity of our schools to the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Reactor. We are now aware that the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Reactor is a facsimile reactor to Fukushima, a reactor that ultimately spread radiation over a distance that surpassed 50 miles in Japan. In the wake of the Fukushima disaster, your organization advised US Nationals in Japan to evacuate if they were within a radius of 50 miles of the reactor breach.

Please accept this correspondence as a request for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission to expand from 10 to 50 miles minimum, the radiation hazard evacuation zone in the US and to assist us in the construction and implementation of practice evacuation plans in conjunction with local first responders, school officials, related governmental and department heads.

We further request that the NRC make funds available for this work in any community within that 50 mile radius of a nuclear reactor and that there be public hearings so as to prove ability to listen to and really hear local concerns and needs and then create local working committees to support NRC in their role.
