- SALEM Emergency Class At approximately 1310 EST on February 11, 2013 a sturgeon was reported being removed from the Salem Unit 2 Circulating Water System (CWS) Intake trash racks at the Salem Generating Station. At 13:20, also on February 11, 2013, a second sturgeon was removed from the Salem Unit 2 Circulating Water System (CWS) Intake trash racks. The first sturgeon was determined to be a short-nose sturgeon, and the second was determined to be an Atlantic sturgeon, both of which are federally listed endangered species under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended. Nuclear Environmental Affairs has made a determination that this is a 4 hr report to the NRC under RAL 11.8.2.a.
Reports were made to the National Marine Fisheries Service [NMFS] concerning these sturgeon at 1440 EST and to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Division of Fish &
Wildlife at 1450 EST by Nuclear Environmental Affairs personnel.
Both sturgeon were alive and released back into the Delaware River at approximately 15:00 after condition assessment.
The licensee will be notifying the NRC Resident Inspector and the local township.
This report has been sent to the R1DO (Dimitriadis) and the NRR endangered species group.
