Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary January 2013

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for January 2013. This month, we captured eighteen (18) Caretta caretta and seventeen (17) Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. There were no mortalities or sea turtles sent for rehabilitation in January.

Throughout the month, the 5-inch barrier net experienced only light loads of algae that entered into the intake canal system and no jellyfish were observed. Overall, the temporary barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5-inch net. To date, Florida Power & Light continues to work towards the installation of a permanent 5-inch barrier net.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for the year 2013. In addition, this spreadsheet also tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year.

2. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 9/25/01, 8/24/05, 7/26/06, 5/29/09, 11/10/11, 9/2/12 and 1/4/13.

3. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 12/10/05, 9/21/06, 12/18/06, 4/21/07, 12/6/07, 5/25/08, 10/9/08, 6/15/09, 6/13/11 and 1/4/13. New inconel tag inserted in right front flipper on this capture event.

4. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 10/4/07, 10/20/11, 7/21/12, 12/12/12 and 1/6/13.

5. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 12/7/12 and 1/9/13. PAPILLOMAS (Tumor Score=56).

6. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 11/28/10 and 1/12/13. Inconel tag #EEA174 inserted today in the right front flipper.

7. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 11/25/08, 11/4/09, 9/12/10, 9/7/11, 10/31/11, 5/30/12 and 1/15/13. New inconel tags inserted today.

8. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 6/13/02, 9/23/04, 11/2/04, 4/18/05, 7/2/05, 8/16/05, 9/25/05, 1/18/06, 3/13/06, 7/23/06, 8/14/06, 9/10/06, 10/22/06, 11/6/07, 2/12/08, 12/5/08, 10/27/09, 2/21/10, 9/30/10, 12/23/11 and 1/20/13. Kyphotic and fat.

Moderate fresh scrape in axillary area of left front flipper. New inconel tag inserted on this capture event.

9. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 5/3/11, 10/1/11 and 1/20/13.

10. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 4/11/12, 5/6/12, 7/21/12, 12/14/12 and 1/22/13.

11. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 12/30/03, 10/6/04, 2/9/07, 5/24/07, 6/10/07, 7/26/09, 12/29/09, 3/23/10, 9/15/11 and 1/27/13. New inconel tag inserted on this capture event. Moderate fresh scrape (1cm deep, 4.5cm long) in carapace.

12. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 11/24/12 and 1/30/13. Moderate fresh scrapes noted. Crack in upper tomium from entrainment.

13. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 9/18/11, 4/26/12, 7/7/12 and 1/30/13. New inconel tags inserted on this capture event.
