Request that Pilgrim Nuclear installation high capacity radiation filters on containment vents.

January 7, 2013

Dear USNRC Commissioners:

I understand that you will be discussing, at your meeting Wednesday, January 9, whether or not to require all operators of GE Mark I and II reactors in the United States to install high capacity radiation filters on containment vents.

I am writing you on behalf of my many constituents living in close proximity to the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth, MA, which has a Mark I reactor. I urge you to follow your technical staff's recommendation to require such filters.

The containment vessels on GE Mark I and II reactors are known to have faults, and vents were created to fix those faults, but the vents currently do not have filters on them - including Pilgrim's.

We know that if a serious accident occurred at Pilgrim the unfiltered vent would allow widespread radiological contamination. If the released gasses were filtered, there would be much less danger.

This scenario -- an accident at Pilgrim causing a large release of radioactive gasses -- is not "unthinkable." It happened in Fukushima, which had reactors and containment vessels of the same type as Pilgrim's.

In the interest of "protecting people and the environment," I hope you will insist that the owners and operators of these facilities install filters as soon as possible. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely, Rep. Tom Gaiter Massachusetts State Representative 1 2 th Plymouth District 1
