Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary November 2012

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for November 2012. This month, we captured seven (7) Caretta caretta and twenty-three (23) Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. One sea turtle was sent for rehabilitation and there was also one mortality for the month of November.

On November 12th, a juvenile green turtle with fibropapillomatosis was captured in the tangle nets at the intake canal. The turtle had large tumors in both eyes. The animal was transported the following day to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) stranding coordinator for rehabilitation. This incident was considered to be non-causal to power plant operations.

On November 26th, a dead juvenile green turtle was found tangled in the 5-inch barrier net below the waterline during the morning net check. This turtle had two fishing hooks with line embedded in its left front flipper (pompano rig with a 3-ounce pyramid weight). The animal was held on ice and delivered by the FWC stranding coordinator to Nancy Mettee, DVM for necropsy. After consultation with FWC, this incident was considered to be causal to power plant operations (pending necropsy).

The integrity of the 5-inch barrier net was maintained throughout the month of November. However, a juvenile green turtle was observed west of the temporary barrier net on November 2nd. IRG biologists redoubled their efforts and proactively hand captured the turtle the same day. Even though canal monitoring efforts were increased in response to this event, no additional turtles have been observed beyond the first barrier net to date.

The planned power plant outage is now over and Florida Power & Light is continuing to work towards the installation of a permanent 5-inch barrier net.

The entrainment of algae and jellyfish into the intake canal has been negligible throughout the month. On November 29th, Underwater Engineering Services (UESI) performed quarterly net inspections on the barrier nets within the intake canal system (specifically, the temporary 5-inch; 8-inch A-1-A; and the Underwater Intrusion Detection System, or 10-inch U.I.D.S. nets). No holes were found and the nets were reported to be in good condition. On November 30th, UESI began cleaning the 5-inch barrier net, including the removal of sediment and debris.

2 The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for the year 2012. In addition, this spreadsheet also tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

NOTES

1. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding #JRG121112-01. PAPILLOMAS (Tumor Score = 32). Very large tumors in both eyes. Transported by the Florida Fish & Wildlife (FWC) stranding coordinator to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton the following day.
2. DEAD (CAUSAL MORTALITY). Stranding# STW121126-01. Two fishing hooks with line embedded in left front flipper (pompano rig with a 3oz pyramid weight). Turtle found tangled in the 5-inch barrier net below the waterline during the morning net check. Held on ice and delivered by the FWC stranding coordinator to Nancy Mettee, DVM for necropsy.
