Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary October 2012
Dear Meghan,
Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for October 2012. This month, we captured fifteen (15) Caretta caretta and seventeen (17) Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. There were no mortalities or sea turtles sent for rehabilitation in October.
Both the temporary 5-inch and 8-inch A-1-A barrier nets became partially submerged during the month of October. A 10 to 15-foot span of the A-1-A net was submerged at both the north and south ends due to the combined effects of tidal action and outage conditions; the net was forced underwater by up to 3 inches by the recurring high tides. In addition, the extreme north end of the 5-inch barrier net was submerged by up to one inch during the storm surge from Hurricane Sandy on two successive days.
Throughout the month, the 5 barrier net experienced light loads of algae that entered into the intake canal and jellyfish entrainment was negligible. Beyond the temporary effects of the storm surge, the integrity of the 5-inch barrier net was maintained and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5-inch net. Florida Power &
Light continues to work towards the installation of a permanent 5-inch barrier net as it transitions from the design phase to the selection of a contractor in the coming months.
The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for the year 2012. In addition, this spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Sincerely, Steve 1
