OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY RULEMAKINGS AND ADJUDICATIONS STAFF Re:

Indian Point Units 2 and 3 License Renewal Application NRC Docket Nos. 50-247-LR and 50-286-LR ASLBP No. 07-858-03-LR-BDO1

Dear Sir or Madam:

I am writing on behalf of the Utility Workers Union of America Local 1-2 and its members to express support for the license renewal of Units 2 and 3 at the Indian Point Energy Center, in Buchanan, New York. We represent the men and women who maintain and operate both Units 2 and 3 at the Indian Point facility. It is my understanding that the NRC is considering numerous issues in connection with the license renewal application, including the effect of relicensing on the potential for alternative energy sources This Union is the collective bargaining representative of the nonsupervisory employees of Entergy at the Indian Point plant. Many of our members live in Buchanan and neighboring communities.

They are probably the people most concerned - for themselves, their fellow workers and their families - about the safety of the Indian Point reactors; and they are confident that they can continue to operate the plant in a manner that does not endanger themselves or the residents of the region.

In addition, for them, Indian Point is more than just an employer; its role in preserving local land values ensures that, as homeowners, they will continue to receive a return on their investment well into the future. The renewal of Indian Point's operating license is imperative to the viability of the communities throughout the Hudson Valley region where many of the plant's 1100 employees live.

Indian Point is a major economic force in the area and, as such, is responsible for the direct and indirect employment of tens of thousands of workers, including this Union's 410 members who work at the facility. These employees live, work, and invest their time, talent, and hard-earned dollars in the region. They pay local sales, income, and property taxes, and serve their communities.

They also invest their time and talent to make sure that the Indian Point plant operates safely for the people and the environment of the Hudson Valley and New York City, while providing electricity at economical rates.

UTILITY WORKERS UNION OF AMERICA Local 1-2, Affiliated with AFL-CIO Additionally, the numerous benefits of Indian Point's continued operation, including electric reliability, minimized power costs, and increased public safety, have contributed to the relocation of new businesses, industries, and people to the region. The loss of this large-scale employer would adversely impact the lower Hudson Valley, leading to skyrocketing unemployment, the loss of millions of dollars in tax revenues, and the eventual relocation of workers looking for new employment.

Indian Point's significant role in driving economic development is a key factor contributing to the maintenance of land values in the communities near the plant. Those values would surely decrease if the facility were closed. I encourage you to renew the license for Indian Point.

Sincerely, James T Slevin Vice President Utility Workers Union of America Local 1-2 cc:
