Sep 15 12 10:51a mu a 4 fl 4 -A Office of the Secretary, Rulemakings and Adjudications Staff, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555-0001 Fax: (301) 415-1101 September 14, 2012 I urge the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, in the strongest terms, to deny Entergy's application for a 20-year license extension for the two operating nuclear reactors, IP-2 and IP-3 at Indian Point Energy Facility in Buchanan, New York.
You need not search further for a reason for closure given that the most glaring is that approximately 20 million people live or work within 50 miles of Indian Point and there is no evacuation plan for New York City. Within just minutes of an incident or accident at Indian Point, gridlock would take place making evacuation impossible.
We have already witnessed serious nuclear accidents at Fukishima, Three Mile Island, and Chernobyl. In the space of one week, in August 2011, residents of New York experienced the effects of an earthquake, tornado and Hurricane Irene.
It is illogical and negligent to proceed with relicensing as if an accident or incident can't happen here. Must these lessons be learned the hard way?
Nuclear power is being replaced by energy efficiency and renewables, repowering and improved storage and transmission capability. In January 2012, the New York State Assembly Committee on Energy concluded that there is more than enough power to allow Indian Point to close without overburdening ratepayers or threatening reliability standards.
You have been entrusted to protect our nation from potentially irreparable harm.
Your decision is abundantly clear. There is no reason to keep Indian Point open any longer and there are countless reasons to close it. Indian Point should not be relicensed; it should be shut down and the funding for its proper decommissioning and long term monitoring should be ensured.
Sincerely, DOCKETED USNRC Ellen Weininger 24llrescott Avenue September 17, 2012 (8:30 am.)
