Indian Point Indian Point carries a risk-benefits ratio that is unacceptable. It should be closed, and its dangers should be mitigated or eliminated. It has little to offer, and its contribution to to electric power for the region and drawbacks are legion. It contributes negligibly to the Lower Hudson power needs, while presenting multiple environmental disadvantages including deleterious effects on the biological richness of the area. Because it takes up millions of gallons of cooling water it kills a large amount of the plancton, the base of the food pyramid that feeds a major proportion of the River's resident and migratory fish, including shad, herring, and striped bass, to mention just a few. It also kills legions of eggs and fingerlings sucked up with cooling water. Several of these species spawn in the Hudson River, and several spend a few years as fingerlings there before migrating out to sea, only to return there to spawn the next generations. Thus the Hudson River thereby affects a very large area of the Eastern seaboard, and impacts negatively the economic life of thousands. It represents an ongoing ecological disaster that must be prevented.
This is in addition to the toxic materials it dumps into the River waters and spews into the air. These drawbacks to society far outweigh the benefits it offers. Indian Point must be closed as soon as possible. The profits of one Company cannot trump the life and well being of thousands.
