I am a NYC native. In the summer of 1977. I rented a bungalow for the summer at a colony which existed at the time, behind the shopping center, not far from Peekskill.
At a family barbecue, the lights suddenly failed. We were all at table outdoors, close to dinner hour. The evening sky for miles around suddenly turned a sickening green. We never heard the reason for this stunning event. And that is the reason for this post. If it had been a weather phenomenon, it would have received some mention in the newspapers, or on the radio when power was restored. But to this day, that phenomenon has never been mentioned.
I wondered at the time if there might have been an event at The Indian Point plant. I wonder now if there were, then how many other unrecorded events might have occurred since then.
Facilities grow old and like every system glitches are inevitable. Can we afford a Chernobil here in densely populated Hudson Valley and the watershed which is the lifeline to New York City? Think.
