Docket, Hearing

Subject:

Relicensing Indian Point

Dear Ms. Vietti-Cook:

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the relicensing of the Indian Point nuclear power plant. I live in Tarrytown, New York, about 13 miles south of Indian Point. I'm just one of 20 million people who live in a 50-mile radius of the plant, and an accident at Indian Point would be catastrophic for us all.

Unfortunately, as you are probably aware, the plant sits above two seismic fault lines, with an estimated potential for a 7.0 magnitude earthquake.

In addition, given its proximity to New York City, Indian Point is a target for terrorists. There are already more than 1,500 tons of radioactive waste stored in unfortified containers there, which New York State has described as "vulnerable to attack."

I have attended the annual NRC meetings with Entergy for many years, and I am aware - and find extremely frustrating and troubling - that according to the tightly circumscribed scope of the relicensing regulations, these factors are not supposed to be taken into account when the decision about whether or not to relicense Indian Point is being made. However, the primary mission of the NRC is to protect public health and safety, and therefore it is my earnest hope that appropriate exemptions to those limited regulations can - and will - be made so that you take into account all the information that is relevant to determining whether public and health and safety will be seriously at risk if Indian Point is allowed to continue to operate.

Thank you very much for your attention to my profound concerns about the dangers posed by relicensing Indian Point.

Respectfully yours, Elizabeth C. Segal 33 Fairview Avenue Tarrytown, NY 10591 DOCKETED 914-631-6977 USNRC esegalkearthlink.net September 14, 2012 (1:35 p.m.)
