ALARA Policy and Reviews for the Retained Premises RP-RPP006.00 1.0 PURPOSE This document establishes the West Valley Site Management Program's (WVSMP) policy and requirements for maintaining radiation exposures and releases as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) through the implementation of its Retained Premises Radiation Protection Program, in accordance with 10 CFR Part 20 Standards for Protection Against Radiation.

2.0 ALARA POLICY The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is committed to maintaining radiation exposures and releases of radioactive material within regulatory limits and ALARA.

The WVSMP will review work activities at the Western New York Nuclear Service Center (WNYNSC) that are under the Part 50 license, but outside the authority of the West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) Act, to assure that safety and radiation protection practices are implemented to keep radiation exposures and releases of radioactive material ALARA.

3.0 ALARA PRACTICES The WVSMP Radiation Protection Program will limit radiation exposures through the establishment of various administrative and engineered controls such as:

  • Administrative dose limits 0 Prejob safety evaluations and planning
  • Routine radiation surveys
  • Control of access to radioactive materials areas 0 Training of workers in radiation protection practices 0 Proper waste minimization and management 4.0 ALARA REVIEWS The WVSMP RSO will prepare and submit a quarterly report to the Part 20 Radiation Safety Committee (Part 20 RSC) that summarizes radiation protection program activities related to maintaining radiation exposures and releases ALARA. This report will include summaries of.
  • Dosimetry reports
  • Facility radiation survey results a Enviromnental radiation monitoring results 0 Task-specific radiation monitoring and survey results a Safety assessment documentation The Part 20 RSC will review the report to ensure that reasonable efforts are made to maintain doses ALARA, and to verify that WVSMP activities are being conducted in compliance with 10 CFR Part 20 and
