Relicensing Comment: Indian Point Nuclear Reactor September 13, 2012 (10:50 a.m.)

OFFICE OF SECRETADY To: The Nuclear 1r RULEMAKINGS AND Regulatory Commission ADJUDICATIONS STAFF Re: Relicensing of Indian Point Nuclear Reactor September 13, 2012 It has just come to my attention that the NRC is receiving public comments and concerns on the relicensing of the Indian Point nuclear facility in Buchanan, NY.

You all must be tired of comparisons with the Fukushima, Japan reactors. I apologize for bringing this up again, but those were reactors positioned near a large population center, as well.

With a population of 30 million, Tokyo is like New York (17.8 m) and London (12.2 m) - the largest cities in America and Europe - put together. The evacuation of cities of this size would deform and weaken their nations considerably.

The much larger population of Tokyo was protected from Fukushima by only 128 miles, prevailing winds and currents.

New York City's smaller population is protected from the Indian Point reactors in Buchanan, NY by only 47 miles, and it is downstream.

Knowing that catastrophic disasters are both possible and inherent in nuclear energy production makes siting a plant at Indian Point an act of hubris and folly. It should never have been built there to begin with and Indian Point should not be relicensed now. They've been playing nuclear roulette with our nation's largest city for forty years. Giving them another roll would be stupid.

I am calling on all of you at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to resign your places at the industry's table and take up the mantle of protecting the people of New York City. My son is there. I have hundreds of friends there.

He has hundreds of friends there. It is one of the great cities in the world. With an industry this dirty and this dangerous, their safety should be your primary concern.

In the past the NRC has granted every single license extension asked. This by itself is scandalous. You have before you another shaky, aging plant run by Entergy Corporation - not a model of corporate citizenship -

sitting above one of the largest and most important population centers in the world. As we have just noted the eleventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on that city, you have the chance to remove or leave in place an even bigger, more predictably dangerous threat that is just 47 miles upstream.

Remove it.

Sincerely yours, Scott Ainslie
