Indian Point License Extension

Dear Nuclear Regulatory Commissioners,

Please deny Entergy's request to re-license the Indian Point's nuclear reactors for an additional 20 years.

In the time since Indian Point received its original license we have learned a great deal about the geology of its location and the problem of disposing of spent fuel.

We now know Indian Point sits on a fault (last year's earthquake in Virginia showed that the eastern part of the nation is just as susceptible as the west), it is impossible to evacuate a large populated area (Katrina proved that even with several days warning), and despite the low probability, nuclear accidents do happen (see Fukushima, TMI, Chernobyl, and the many minor missteps reported to you on an annual basis).

Additionally, from an economic point of view, Indian Point owes us nothing. The initial investment during the initial license period has been recovered. When the plant is shut down for whatever reason, New York City does not go dark. The economic risk to our nation's economy caused by a serious accident at Indian Point is much greater than any potential gain from having Indian Point continue to function: consider an incident that would affect Westchester citizens that work in NYC, Wall Street's functioning, or a major evacuation on the east coast Entergy would like make the gravy from the meat of New York citizens who are at risk. We should be thankful for the first 20 years and let it go.

I urge you to deny this license extension.

Thank you, Hal Cohen 5 Rhymney Road Fishkill, NY 12524 DOCKETED USNRC September 13, 2012 (8:00 a~m.)
