Monday, September 10, 2012 10:29 AM Docket, Hearing Limited appearance statement in support of renewing operating license for Indian Point Nuclear Generating Unit Nos. 2 and 3 I am a resident of Mahopac, NY since 1987, and a consumer, since then, of electricity generated by Indian Point; as well as living about 15 miles east of the facility, which some allege to be within the zone of critical radiation danger in the event of a catastrophe.
I am unconcerned about the risk of a catastrophe or other major safety problem at Indian Point, as I consider its likelihood to be negligible. Furthermore, I believe that removing this source of electrical generation would unacceptably drive up the price of electricity (and, consequently, almost everything else); and I also think that the electrical grid is already operating at or close to capacity, and that it would be foolish and irresponsible to shut down any generating facility until new ones are built and online.
The stark examples of Chernobyl and Fukushima are, I believe, utterly irrelevant to Indian Point or any other US nuclear facility. Nuclear electricity has a near-perfect safety track record in the US, with no demonstrated harm even from our worst mishap at Three Mile Island. It is also cleaner than coal-or oil-fired generation. Until better alternatives are up and running, or until Indian Point is demonstrated to be an unquestionable hazard, I believe that it needs to remain open.
