OFFICE OF SECRETARY RULEMAKINGS AND ADJUDICATIONS STAFF

Dear Sir or Madam:

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 456 is a labor organization whose intent is to represent Teamsters in all matters concerning economic justice, workplace safety, training, and collective bargaining to help maintain health, dignity and respect for all Teamsters and their families. It is the mission of the Local to develop, improve and enforce the program and standards of OSHA, to reduce the hours of daily labor, to secure adequate pay for work and to promote and protect the health and retirement of our members and their families through health and pension benefits.

It is my understanding that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is considering numerous issues in connection with the license renewal application for Indian Point including the effect of relicensing on land values in the area and the potential for alternative energy sources.

Indian Point Energy Center employs thousands of highly skilled, highly trained workers and contractors. With 85 years of electricity operating experience, Entergy is one of the world's largest producers of safe and clean nuclear energy. Indian Point personnel receive more job-related training than those of any other industry. Even after undergoing extensive training prior to assuming their plant responsibilities, reactor operators receive re-training every fifth week on the job to assure their skills are finely tuned. The Local believes that workplace safety is of the utmost importance, and appreciates Entergy's strong commitment to both public and employee safety.

Furthermore, Indian Point is a critical source of revenue that creates thousands of jobs and produces 2,000 megawatts of electricity for the region. The Local believes that shutting down Indian Point would have a catastrophic impact on the region's economy and consumer electricity rates.

Replacing Indian Point would dramatically increase New York's dependence on imported power and force businesses out of the region.

For these reasons, and many others, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 456 hereby supports and petitions the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to relicense the Indian Point Energy Center facility.

We look forward to hearing from you regarding this matter.
