Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary August 2012

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for August 2012. This month, we captured nineteen (19) Caretta caretta and seven (7) Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. There were no mortalities or sea turtles sent for rehabilitation in August.

Throughout the month, the 5 barrier net experienced light to severe loads of debris that entered into the intake canal. The principle constituents of entrained debris were either jellyfish or algae. Jellyfish entrainment ranged from light to moderate in severity, whereas algae stretched the gamut from light to severe. Although typically categorized as light, there was one day when the algae was categorized as severe. Still, the temporary barrier net performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5-inch net. To date, Florida Power &

Light and Morgan & Eklund, Inc. continue to work together on the installation of a permanent 5-inch barrier net.

A planned 99-day power plant outage began in the second week of August. As a result, the flow rate in the intake canal has greatly diminished and the water level has risen significantly. Due to the combined effects of tidal action and outage conditions, a 20-foot portion of the 8-inch A-1-A net is now at the waterline. FPL has been apprised of the issue and is currently working on a solution.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for the year 2012. In addition, this spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely, Steve
