OFFICE OF SECRETARY Office of the Secretary RULEMAKINGS AND Rulemakings and Adjudications Staff ADJUDICATIONS STAFF U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555-0001
Dear Sir or Madam:
On behalf of the 2.5 million members of the New York State AFL-CIO, I am writing to support and request the relicensing of Indian Point Energy Center (In reference to Indian Point Units 2 and 3 License Renewal Application, NRC Docket Nos. 50-247-LR and 50-286-LR, ASLB No. 07-858-03-LR-BDO1).
It is my understanding that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is considering numerous issues in connection with the license renewal application for Indian Point including the effect of relicensing on land values in the area and the potential for alternative energy sources.
Indian Point Energy Center employs thousands of highly skilled, highly trained workers and contractors who live in the immediate and surrounding areas. With 85 years of electricity operating experience, Entergy Is one of the world's largest producers of safe and clean nuclear energy. Indian Point personnel receive more job-related training than those of any other industry. Even after undergoing extensive training prior to assuming their plant responsibilities, reactor operators receive re-training every fifth week on the job to assure their skills are finely tuned. Workplace safety Is of the utmost importance, and the New York State AFL-CIO appreciates Entergy's strong commitment to both public and employee safety.
Furthermore, Indian Point is a critical source of revenue that creates thousands of jobs and produces 2,000 megawatts of electricity for the region. Shutting down Indian Point would have a catastrophic impact on the region's economy and consumer electricity rates. In addition to costing thousands of jobs and causing Irreparable harm to the local and state economies, replacing Indian Point would dramatically increase New York's dependence on imported power and force businesses out of the region.
For these reasons the New York State AFL-CIO strongly supports the application, and requests that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission relicense the Indian Point Energy Center facility.
We look forward to hearing from you regarding this matter.
Sincerely, Mario Cilento President eb:opeiu-153 cc:
