OFFICE OF SECRETARY RULEMAKINGS AND ADJUDICATIONS STAFF Re:

Indian Point Units 2 and 3 License Renewal Application NRC Docket Nos. 50-247-LR and 50-286-LR ASLBP No. 07-858-03-LR-BDOI

Dear Secretary Vietti-Cook:

My name is Susan Granata and I live in Eastchester, NY. The purpose for this letter is to express my support for the license renewal of the Indian Point Energy Center located in Buchanan, New York. It is my understanding that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is considering numerous issues in connection with the license renewal application including alternative sources of energy.

As you review the license renewal application for Indian Point, including by conducting the appropriate safety and environmental reviews, please keep in mind that presently there is not an alternative energy source that provides all of the benefits that Indian Point does today. Indian Point is essential in ensuring the reliability of our electric system. Indian Point's 2,083 megawatts of generation provides between 25% and 30% of the electricity for New York City.

Numerous studies have shown the crucial role that Indian Point plays in providing low-cost reliable power. Last year, the City of New York's Department of Environmental Protection released the results of a study performed by Charles River Associates. That independent study demonstrated that any alternative to Indian Point would be higher-priced (between $2 to $3 billion), would reduce air quality as there would be an increase of approximately 15% in carbon emissions, and would reduce the reliability of the electric grid.

For the reliable, low-cost power produced 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
of the day, 7 days of the week, year-round with no greenhouse gas emissions, I strongly encourage you to issue a renewed license for Indian Point.

Thank you, Susan Granata Susan Granata cc:
