Dear Secretary Vietti-Cook:
My name is Matthew J. Middleton. I am a practicing attorney in midtown Manhattan and a resident of Harlem, New York. and the purpose for this letter is to express my support for the license renewal of the Indian Point Energy Center located in Buchanan, New York. It is my understanding that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is considering numerous issues in connection with the license renewal application and I would like to highlight the significant contributions made by the facility in maintaining a reliable source of "clean power.
As you review the license renewal application for Indian Point, including by conducting the appropriate safety and environmental reviews-please keep in mind that presently, there is no alternative energy source that provides all of the benefits that Indian Point does today.
Indian Point is essential in ensuring the reliability of our electric system-especially in an era where electricity is crucial to power our homes and businesses and increasingly, the electronic devices we usc throughout the day. Indian Point's 2,083 megawatts of generation provides between 25% and 30% of the electricity for New York City and the lower Westchester County area and I I percent of the power used statewide. Indian Point is a "base-load" power plant that is capable of supplying electricity 24 hours2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br /> a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year.
Communities in the City and in the lower Hudson Valley rely on the power supplied by Indian Point to maintain their businesses, keep the lights on in their homes, and make sure their electricity costs do not skyrocket.
Numerous studies have shown the crucial role that Indian Point plays in providing low-cost reliable power. Last year, the City of New York's Department of Environmental Protection released the results of a study performed by Charles River Associates. That independent study demonstrated that any alternative to Indian Point would be higher-priced (between $2 to $3
billion), would reduce air quality as there would be an increase of approximately 15% in carbon emissions), and would reduce the reliability of the electric grid.
For the reliable, low-cost power produced 24 hours2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br /> of the day, 7 days of the week, year-round with no greenhouse gas emissions, I strongly encourage you to issue a renewed license for Indian Point.
