Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary July 2012

Dear Dr. Robbin Trindell,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for July 2012. This month, we captured thirty-three (33) Caretta caretta, ten (10) Chelonia mydas, and one (1) Eretmochelys imbricata in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. There were no mortalities or sea turtles sent for rehabilitation in July.

Throughout the month, the 5 barrier net experienced light to severe loads of jellyfish that entered into the intake canal, whereas algae entrainment was light. The temporary barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5-inch net. To date, Florida Power & Light and Morgan & Eklund, Inc.

continue to work together on the installation of a permanent 5-inch barrier net.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for the year 2012. In addition, this spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year.

NOTES

1. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 10/9/11 and 1/8/12.

2. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 11/13/04, 4/11/08, 5/5/08, 9/25/08, 10/12/08, 7/12/10, 12/6/10, 9/10/11, 11/1/11 and 1/9/12.

3. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 7/28/09, 12/3/09, 2/11/10, 9/3/10, 5/18/11 and 1/9/12. Turtle missing 15% from terminal end of RRF (healed).

New inconel tag inserted today in LFF.

2. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). STSSN# CRM120213-01. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 5/4/06. Turtle hand captured immediately after entrainment while floating down canal. Emaciated and lethargic. Transported by IRG biologists the same day to Loggerhead Marine Life Center.

3. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). STSSN# STW120226-02. Turtle captured in tangle nets set daily by Inwater Research Group (IRG) biologists. Long line hook lodged in throat. Transported half-way to Sea World by IRG staff. Turtle transferred to Sea World personnel at Yeehaw Junction.

1. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). STSSN# DRC120401-01. Turtle underweight and lethargic with scutes sloughing off.

Bone exposed on carapace from scute sloughing in two places (not fresh scrapes) and 5% of posterior carapace missing from an old injury (healed). Heavy epibiont load/coverage. SMCL is an estimate.

MLC staff picked up turtle and transported it to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno for rehab.

2. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). STSSN# JRG120409-01. Severely emaciated and lethargic. Recovered from 5-inch barrier net in the morning. Eyes sunken in and heartbeat visible (moribund state). Missing 15% from LRF and 10% from RRF (both healed). Heavy epibiont load. Turtle transported to LMC in Juno Beach by IRG biologists in the morning.

3. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). STSSN #STW120411-01. Recovered floating at surface near barrier net (may have buoyancy issues). Perimeter of carapace broken at right anterior margin (14cm x 6cm; necrotic). Broken bone exposed with opening into body cavity. Lethargic & underweight with sloughing of scutes on carapace.

Small 1cm hole in right anterior inframarginals of plastron. Transported by FWC sea turtle stranding coordinator (Amber) to MLC in Juno Beach.

4. Dermochelys coriacea. Relatively small leatherback sea turtle. Weight estimated at 450lbs (~200kg).

Old discolored scar in left shoulder. CSCL was taken on the right side of keel. Over the keel curved length was 148.5. Fresh scrapes were minor. Biopsy taken.

5. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 9/18/11 and 4/26/12. New inconel tag #BBR134 inserted today in RFF.

6. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 1/12/07, 2/28/07, 7/12/07, 8/5/07, 9/8/07, 3/31/09, 12/2/09, 3/22/10, 10/12/10, 6/23/11, 10/20/11 and 4/27/12.

Small deformity (lump) on last two vertebral scutes.

7. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 10/12/11 and 4/29/12. Recent shark bite in inguinal/ventral area of RRF. Bite was 10cm across and still healing. Shark rakings also on plastron, presumably from same attack (healing).

1. Adult female. Tail length = 225 mm. Moderate fresh scrape above left eye.

2. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 2/16/12 and 5/5/12.

3. Adult female. Tail length = 190 mm. Large carbuncle on dorsal surface of neck (possible mating wound; 6cmx9cm).

Multiple mating scars on ventral surface of neck. Deep moderate fresh scrape above left eye (skull exposed; 1cmx1cm).

4. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 4/11/12 and 5/6/12.

5. Adult female. Tail length = 220 mm. Broken phalanges and circumferential laceration in distal LFF (necrotic tissue).

6. Adult male. Tail length = 420 mm. Sex determined based on tail length (even though SCL is not greater than 85cm).

7. Adult male. Tail length = 520 mm. Healed 12cm gash in anterior carapace along left side of nuchal and 1st vertebral scute (possible old boat strike injury).

8. Adult female. Tail length = 205 mm.

9. REHAB (CAUSAL). STSSN #STW120518-01. Subadult loggerhead recovered floating at surface immediately after entrainment. Animal lethargic with moderate fresh scrape on head (skull exposed just above left eye). Concussion was suspected because the turtle was behaving abnormally but otherwise appeared to be in good general health.

Preliminary determination by IRG biologists was causal pending veterinarian review. Transported by FWC sea turtle stranding coordinator to Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach.

10. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 1/12/07, 2/28/07, 7/12/07, 8/5/07, 9/8/07, 3/31/09, 12/2/09, 3/22/10, 10/12/10, 6/23/11, 10/20/11, 4/27/12 and 5/20/12.

Granulated tissue evident in deep gash in dorsal surface of neck (2.5 cm long; possible old hooking wound).

11. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 10/30/08, 11/07/11 and 5/20/12. PAPILLOMAS (Tumor Score = 1). One small pap at ventral base of RFF.

12. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 10/9/11, 1/8/12, 2/5/12 and 5/24/12.

13. Adult female. Tail length = 224 mm.

14. Adult female. Tail length = 195 mm. Deep gash in right side of face near jaw. Appears to be a recent injury, but not a fresh scrape (healing). Extra photo taken.

15. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 11/25/08, 11/4/09, 9/12/10, 9/7/11, 10/31/11 and 5/30/12.

16. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 12/21/05, 3/28/09 and 5/30/12. New inconel tags inserted today.

17. Adult male. Tail length = 523 mm.

18. Adult female. Tail length = 250 mm.

19. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 8/19/09, 3/8/10 and 5/31/12. Turtle has one extra vertebral scute.

1. Adult female. Tail length = 222 mm. Necrotic bite marks on ventral side of neck (presumably from mating activity). Turtle also missing 50% of right rear flipper (healed).

2. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 4/27/12 and 6/10/12. Turtle missing 10% from the inside trailing edge of the left rear flipper (healed).

3. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on from 6/11/12 and 6/12/12.

4. Adult female. Tail length = 265 mm. Moderate fresh scrape above left eye. Turtle missing 25% from terminal end of right front flipper (healed).

5. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 1/7/10 and 6/12/12. Small broken J-hook in left front flipper near shoulder (necrotic tissue present). Minor healed flipper damage. Inconel tag inserted this capture in RFF. Extra photos taken of hooking injury.

6. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 6/12/05, 4/17/09, 11/12/11 and 6/13/12.

7. Adult male. Tail length = 430 mm. Minor healed rear flipper damage. Moderate fresh scrapes on head and above eye (skull exposed on both).

8. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 12/4/08, 8/18/09, 9/15/09 and 6/20/12. Moderate fresh scrape on head (skull exposed). New inconel tags inserted today.

9. Adult female. Tail length = 256 mm. Shark attack victim. Large healing cuts and lacerations in right rear flipper from shark attack (5% missing; granulated tissue). Tooth puncture holes from shark bite in right posterior marginals.

10. Adult female. Tail length = 221 mm.

11. STRANGE TAG (PIT tag in right front flipper). Source of tag yet to be determined. Two new inconel tags inserted today. Possible mating wounds on neck.

12. Adult female. Tail length = 219 mm.

13. STRANGE TAG (inconel tag #XXV093 and PIT tag). Source of tag yet to be determined. Inconel tag

BBR267 inserted today.

Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 8/18/07, 8/21/07, 8/24/07, 9/2/07, 9/10/07, 10/25/07, 12/17/07, 1/25/08, 4/6/08, 4/30/08, 7/13/08, 8/24/08, 9/13/08, 10/6/08, 10/18/08, 4/17/09, 6/17/09, 8/13/09, 10/27/09, 6/11/10, 9/15/10, 9/15/11, 10/21/11, 11/30/11 and 7/7/12. New inconel tag inserted today in left front flipper.

7. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 10/12/11, 4/29/12 and 7/7/12. Turtle has irregular scute pattern. Old injury on right posterior carapace.

8. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 9/18/11, 4/26/12 and 7/7/12. Turtle has only one inconel tag.

9. Adult female. Tail length = 303 mm. Old mating scar on ventral side of neck.

10. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 8/5/08, 5/10/11, 6/13/11, 7/25/11 and 7/7/12. Deep moderate fresh scrape under right eye.

11. Adult female. Tail length = 185 mm. Mating scar on left side of neck adjacent to carapace. Claw broken on left front flipper and compound fracture of distal phalange from entrainment (moderate fresh scrape).

12. Adult female. Tail length = 201 mm.

13. STRANGE TAG (PIT Tag #453060194B in right front flipper). Source of tag yet to be determined.

14. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 6/25/12 and 7/12/12.

15. RECAPTURE. New inconel tags inserted today. Turtle missing part of both rear flippers (flipper damage is healed).

18. Adult female. Tail length = 182 mm. Multiple deep fresh scrapes around eyes and nares (moderate scrapes from entrainment).

19. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 10/04/07, 10/20/11 and 7/21/12.

20. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 4/11/12, 5/6/12 and 7/21/12.

21. Adult female. Tail length = 180 mm. Turtle is missing 40% from terminal end of right front flipper and 5% from distal trailing edge of left front flipper. Flipper damage is healed.

22. Adult female. Tail length = 211 mm.

23. Adult female. Tail length = 206 mm.

24. Adult female. Tail length = 240 mm.

25. Adult female. Tail length = 244 mm.

26. Adult female hawksbill. Tail length = 137 mm. Moderate fresh scrapes on head (skull exposed).
