REQUESTS FOR RELIEF
ARKANSAS NUCLEAR ONE, UNIT 2

By letter dated March 26, 2012 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession Number ML12086A293), Entergy (thelicensee) submitted Request for Relief (RR) No. ANO2-ISI-008, from the requirements of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (ASME Code),Section XI, for Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 2 (ANO, Unit 2).
In accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR)
50.55a(g)(5)(iii), the licensee has submitted the subject requests for relief for limited examinations in multiple ASME Code Examination Categories. The ASME Code requires that 100% of the examination volumes, or surface areas, described in ASME Code,Section XI, Tables IWB-2500, and IWC-2500 be performed during each interval. The licensee stated that 100% of the ASME Code-required volumes, were impractical to obtain at ANO, Unit 2.
The request for relief apply to the third 10-year inservice inspection (ISI) interval, in which he ASME Code of record for the ANO, Unit 2 third 10-year ISI interval program is the 2001 Edition through the 2003 Addenda of Section XI of the ASME Code.
ANO, Unit 2 also uses the 1995 Edition through the 1996 Addenda for ultrasonic testing (UT) examination requirements. The ANO, Unit 2 third 10-year ISI interval ended on March 25, 2010. The licensee extended the third 10-year ISI interval by one year in accordance with ASME Code,Section XI, Paragraph IWA-2430 for the 2R21 (twenty-first) refueling outage.
The NRC has reviewed the information submitted by the licensee and determined the following additional information is required to complete the evaluation.
REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- 1. For the Nozzle-to-Extension Pipe Welds contained in Table 1 of the licensee's submittal dated March 26, 2012, provide the material type of the nozzles and pipe extensions.
- 2. For the Nozzle-to-Extension Pipe Welds contained in Table 1 for Components ID# 03-005,03-006, and 03-007, the basis for the limitations for examination were omitted in both Table 1 and associated Figures 5, 6, and 7. Provide the descriptions of the limitations that prevented the scanning of 100 percent of the volume of the welds for the subject components.
