VIRGIL C. SUMMER NUCLEAR STATION (VCSNS) UNIT 1 DOCKET NO. 50-395 OPERATING LICENSE NO. NPF-12 SPECIAL REPORT (SPR) 2012-001 South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G) is submitting this Special Report pursuant to the requirements of Technical Specification 6.9.2 as required by Action 30 of Technical Specification 3.3.3.1.b, Table 3.3-6, Item 2.d.i.

On June 23, 2012, at 0015 hours1.736111e-4 days <br />0.00417 hours <br />2.480159e-5 weeks <br />5.7075e-6 months <br />, the Main Plant Vent Radiation Monitor (RM-A13) was declared inoperable due to erratic monitor display (high voltage failure).

Upon declaring RM-A13 inoperable, VCSNS implemented a preplanned alternate method of monitoring in accordance with the requirements of Action 30 of the Technical Specification. After extensive trouble-shooting, the failure of RM-A13 was determined to be due to a failed detector/preamp assembly. The detector/preamp assembly is currently being refurbished by a vendor. Once the monitor is repaired and tested satisfactorily, it will be returned to service and declared operable.
