Docket. Hearing

Subject:

brief,Ialemen! 011 Indian Poin!

BRiEF STATEMENT ON INDIAN POINT Arguably, when you received your mandate, neither the AEC nor the NRC could have foreseen that the absence of permanent nuclear waste storage would make "temporary" spent fuel storage the absolutely critical national security issue it has become.

National defense experts state we're vulnerable to cyberattacks such as those we apparently launched against Iranian nuclear installations. Our own nuclear installations were specifically cited as vulnerable to such attacks.

Solar storm experts predict the likelihood of a ele~trical-grid-crippling incident that shuts down power for more than a month is now at least twel ve per cent.

Members of the NRC should ask themselves, what would happen to NYC and the United States if there were no power at Indian Point for more than a month' If a cyberattack made the facility uncontrollable ~

In order to avoid potentially destroying the economy of our country and contaminating an area which includes New York City essentially forever, the NRC should require an uninterruptible power supply at all nuclear installations.

It should require that spent fuel at Indian Point be immediately removed from the pool and put into casks. Then get it offsite away from the economic nerve center of the United States.

lastly, as past NRC staff has stated ("a nightmare") J Indian Point is no place for a nuclear reactor.

The NRC has always suffered from inability to "see the forest for the trees".

You are charged with real-world safety regulation. You need to act NOW. National security trumps "cost/benefit analysis",
