May 21, 2012 MEETING

SUMMARY

LICENSEE: NextEra Energy, Seabrook, LLC FACILITY: Seabrook Station, Unit No. 1 (Seabrook)

SUBJECT:

Summary of Annual Assessment Meeting with NextEra On April, 26, 2012, at 6:00 p.m., the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) conducted an open house and public meeting at the One Liberty Lane Conference Center in Hampton, NH.

The NRC conducted the open house and public meeting to discuss the NRCs assessment of NextEras safety performance at Seabrook in 2011.

A meeting notice for an open house type meeting was originally issued on April 15, 2012.

Based on feedback from the Commission, the notice was revised and posted on the NRCs external (public) web page as an open house and formal public meeting format on April 20, 2012. The April 20, 2012, meeting notice can be found in the NRCs Agency wide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) with Accession No. ML12111A199. ADAMS is accessible from the NRC Web page at: http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html.

The NRC presentation included a discussion of its assessment of NextEras safety performance at Seabrook for the period of January 1 through December 31, 2011, as documented in our letter dated March 5, 2012, ( ML12061A239). This year, due to recent public interest, the NRC presentation included a discussion of the alkali-silica reaction (ASR) that was identified to be affecting several concrete buildings at Seabrook. The presentation discussed the basis of the NRCs determination that Seabrook remained safe to operate and an explanation of the agency actions going forward. The NRC staff was available prior to and after the formal meeting to answer questions from individuals and discuss issues or concerns related to Seabrook.

Additional information related to the NRC's Annual Assessment Process and the safety performance of Seabrook can be found on the NRC's web site at:

www.nrc.gov/NRR/OVERSIGHT/ASSESS/index.html.

A number of government officials, NextEra employees, local media, and members of the general public attended the open house and public meeting and were offered the opportunity to question the NRC regarding Seabrooks performance and the role of the agency in ensuring safe plant operations.
