Monticello - Draft RAI on the relief request re. RHR service water pump non-Code repair (TAC ME8476)
Randy, Rick:
The NRC staff is reviewing your relief request dated 4/25/2012 regarding none-Code repair of the residual heat removal (RHR) system service water pump stuffing box. The NRC staff has the following draft RAI question which needs to be discussed in a conference call.
Please discuss whether sufficient leakage of 270 psi service water through the corrosion hole could occur to the point that the 1/4" drain line to the sump would be overwhelmed and service water would be forced through the seal leak-off port into the stuffing box bearing. Would introduction of pressurized service water into the top of the stuffing box bearing be detrimental to bearing service lifetime?
