May 3, 2012 Mr. Douglas J. Walters, Vice President Regulatory Affairs Nuclear Generation Division Nuclear Energy Institute 1776 I Street, NW Suite 400 Washington, DC 20006-3708
Dear Mr. Walters:
I am writing to respond to your letter to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), dated April 20, 2012, where you provided certain information regarding industry plans for subsequent license renewal.
In your letter, you reference a Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) Aging Management Program (AMP) effectiveness review, with results scheduled to be published in December 2012 and a report by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) scheduled to be published in early 2013.
Please inform us when this information will be made available to the NRC staff.
On May 9, 2012, the NRC plans to hold a public meeting to receive comments related to subsequent license renewal. The areas of interest will focus on the process, technical safety issues, and environmental issues as they relate to subsequent license renewal. My staff has reached out to interested stakeholders, including NEI, for participation in the meeting. We view this meeting as an important opportunity to gather information based on broad license renewal experience to date and how that experience will be applied to anticipated second renewals.
In addition to providing comments during the meeting, you may submit electronic comments by email to SLR.Resource@nrc.gov. Comments submitted by May 25, 2012, will be included as part of the May 9, 2012, meeting summary.
To further assist us in planning and considerations, we are interested in potential submittal dates of applications for subsequent license renewal. We are also interested in how the information from the AMP effectiveness review and the EPRl report will support applications for subsequent license renewal. Your near-term provision of this information will assist us in our planning.
Sincerely,
/RA D. Dorman for/
Eric J. Leeds, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation
