Subject:

Project No. 704 - TVA Browns Ferry Unit 2 Surveillance Capsule Test Results Report

Reference:

BWRVIP-86, Revision 1: BWR Vessel and Internals Project, Updated BWR Integrated Surveillance Program (ISP) Implementation Plan, EPRI, Palo Alto, CA:

2008. 1006575.

The purpose of this letter is to inform you that the transmittal of the TVA Browns Ferry Unit 2 120 degree surveillance capsule test report will be delayed beyond the one year reporting requirement of 10CFR50 Appendix H.

The Unit 2 120 degree surveillance capsule was removed from the reactor on March 24, 2011 in accordance with the BWRVIP Integrated Surveillance Program withdrawal schedule documented in BWRVIP-86, Revision 1, referenced above. Shipping of the capsule to the test facility was delayed and then complications arose due to detection of unexpected contamination in the interior of the shipping container leading to further delays in testing of the capsule and transmittal of the report to the NRC. Note that the contamination issues did not involve exceeding any requirements for the shipping of radioactive materials, but did involve atypical contamination levels that required the testing vendor to put additional measures in place to handle the contamination. The BWRVIP is working with the testing vendor to develop an accurate schedule for completion of the testing and submittal of the capsule report to the NRC and will provide the schedule to the NRC staff as soon as possible.
