Please reference your January 19, 2012, letter, received by our office on January 30, 2012, requesting our concurrence with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) list of federally endangered and threatened species that may be affected by the proposed Grand Gulf Nuclear Station, Unit 1 (GGNS) license renewal located within a fifty mile radius of Claiborne County, Mississippi, including Tensas, East Carroll, Madison, Richland and Catahoula Parishes, Louisiana. The Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has reviewed the information you provided, and offers the following comments on the Louisiana portion in accordance with the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (87 Stat. 884, as amended; 16 U.S.C. 1531 et seq.), and the Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act (48 Stat. 401, as amended; 16 U.S.C'.661:et sie`q.).

GGNS is located approximately 25 miles south of Vicksburg,Mississippi on the east bank of the Mississippi River. The federally listed species that occur in Louisiana, within the 50-mile radius of the project area include the threatened Louisiana black bear (Ursus americanus luteolus) and its critical habitat, and the endangered interior least tern (Sterna antillarum), pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) and fat pocketbook pearly mussel (Potamilus capax). We have reviewed the information provided in your attachment and concur with NRC's list of federally endangered and threatened species that may be affected by the proposed GGNS license renewal.
