FIBROUS DEBRIS PREPARATION PROCEDURE FOR EMERGENCY CORE COOLING SYSTEM RECIRCULATION SUMP STRAINER TESTING, REVISION 1

Dear Mr. Butler:

I am responding to your letter dated January 30, 2012 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML120481052), which forwarded Revision 1 to a procedure titled, ZOI [Zone of Influence] Fibrous Debris Preparation: Processing, Storage and Handling (ML120481057). We appreciate the opportunity to review and comment on this procedure. The comments we previously provided have been incorporated, and we have no further comments.

The intent of the generic procedure is to produce fibrous material that is representative of debris generated in the zone of influence. The staff agrees that the guidance in the generic procedure is one way to produce the fibrous debris for sump strainer head loss and bypass testing. The staff believes that the generic procedure will produce acceptable debris. However, the results will be somewhat dependent on human actions not fully controlled by the generic procedure; therefore, the staff declines to officially endorse the protocol. The staff may observe debris preparation as part of its overall review of strainer head loss and bypass testing.
