SUBJECT:

GSI - 191 DOSE ESTIMATES

Dear Mr. Butler:

Per our telephone discussion on January 30, 2012, I am requesting your assistance in gathering updated information on occupational radiation exposures that have been, or would be, incurred during insulation removal modifications associated with Generic Safety Issue (GSI) -191. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff would use this information as part of its response to the Commissions Staff Requirements Memorandum (SRM) of SECY-10-0113.

Since the issuance of that SRM on December 23, 2010, the nuclear industry has advanced its understanding of risk-informed evaluations of GSI-191, zone of influence for various materials, methods of reducing the zone of influence (e.g., banding), and in-vessel effects. All of these have the potential to affect the scope of plant modifications, including insulation removal, needed to address GSI-191. Any information you have regarding the impacts of these items would also be appreciated.

I appreciate your offer to help collect more current information.

Sincerely,

/RA/

Stewart N. Bailey, Chief Safety Issue Resolution Branch Division of Safety Systems Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation
