STAFF REQUIREMENTS - BRIEFING ON BROWNS FERRY UNIT 1, 9:00 A.M., TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2011, COMMISSIONERS CONFERENCE ROOM, ONE WHITE FLINT NORTH, ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND (OPEN TO PUBLIC ATTENDANCE)
The Commission was briefed by the NRC staff on the background and agency actions regarding performance issues at Browns Ferry Unit 1, and representatives from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant briefed the Commission on their plans to improve performance. TVA was represented by: Preston D. Swafford, Chief Nuclear Officer and Executive Vice President, Nuclear Power Group; William R. (Bill) McCollum, Jr., Chief Operating Officer; Don E. Jernigan, Senior Vice President, Nuclear Operations; Robert J.
Whalen, Vice President, Nuclear Engineering, and; Keith J. Polson, Site Vice President, Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant, Units 1, 2, and 3.
The staff should inform the Commission of the actions taken as a result of TVAs submittal of a Part 21 report on the reactor core cooling valve that failed at Browns Ferry Unit 1, along with information about similar valves in use at other facilities and any associated generic correspondence issued.
