I T.HNOLOGY CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES STFFRIN(I ANDf POIICY COMMITTIýE HousE OF REPRE.SENTATIVES WASHINGTON, D.C. 20515 July 15, 2011 The Honorable Gregory B. Jaczko Chairman U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Comnission Washington, DC 20555-0001

Dear Chairman Jaczko:

I am writing to request a status update on the events that took place at the Dresden Generating Station earlier this morning when plant operators declared an alert at 10:16 a.m.

According to a press release, an industrial chemical was released inside a trailer that was located on the campus of the facility but apart from where the nuclear reactors are stored.

It is my understanding that a non-radiological chemical was released was froin a pipe located above ground and this discharge has, subsequently, been stopped. I also understand that, out of precaution, two employees of the Dresden plant were evacuated and taken for observation due to inhalation of the chemicals.

The press release stated that cleanup efforts are already underway and an investigation into what caused the discharge has been initiated. The statement goes on to say that at no time was public safety at risk. However, I would like further clarification from the Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRA) explaining exactly what happened and verifying if public safety is, or ever was, in jeopardy froom this event.

Due to the serious nature of this event, I would appreciate a timely and comprehensive response. You can direct your reply to my Senior Policy Advisor, Jolhn Marshall, at (202)225-4372 or JohaM(lhniail.hotusc. ov.

Thank you in advance for your attention and prompt response and I look forward to hearing back from you.
