SUMMARY
OF ANNUAL ASSESSMENT MEETING WITH NEXTERA On June 8, 2011, at 6:00 p.m., the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) conducted an annual assessment meeting at the Galley Hatch Conference Center, Best Western Inn at Hampton, NH. The NRC conducted the meeting to discuss its assessment of NextEra safety performance at Seabrook for the period January 1 through December 31, 2010, as documented in the NRC annual assessment letter for Seabrook dated March 4, 2011.
The NRC presentation included a discussion of the 2010 performance assessment results and an overview of the remaining planned inspections at Seabrook for calendar year 2010. The NRCs overall assessment was that NextEra operated Seabrook in a manner that preserved public health and safety and the environment. This year because of public interest and the significant press coverage of the nuclear accident in Japan, the NRC presentation also included a discussion of U.S. nuclear plant safety in light of the recent events at Japans Fukushima Nuclear Plants. This presentation included a discussion of the basis of the NRCs assessment that United States nuclear plants remain safe and an explanation of the agency actions going forward.
A number of government officials, NextEra employees, local media, and the general public observed this meeting and were offered the opportunity to ask the NRC questions regarding NextEras performance and the role of the agency in ensuring safe plant operations. The question and answer period accommodated all individuals who desired to speak or ask questions after the business portion of the meeting was completed. Feedback forms submitted by the public following the meeting will be evaluated. The NRC assessment letter for Seabrook can be found in ADAMS with accession number ML110620296. This meeting notice and the attached meeting agenda can be found in ADAMS with accession number ML111430625, and the NRC meeting slides can be found in ADAMS with Accession Number ML111650038.
