RESPONSE TO THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON REACTOR SAFEGUARDS REPORT ON THE SAFETY ASPECTS OF THE LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION FOR SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2
Dear Dr. Abdel-Khalik:
During the 583th meeting of the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (the Committee) held on May 12, 2011, the Committee completed its review of the license renewal application for Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Units 1 and 2, and the associated final safety evaluation report prepared by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). In the Committees final report, dated May 25, 2011, the Committee recommended renewal of the operating licenses for Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Units 1 and 2. The NRC staff appreciates the Committees thorough review of the plants license renewal application and the associated final safety evaluation report. In particular, the Committees review of aging management issues for buried piping and spent fuel pool leakage was particularly helpful as the NRC staff finalized its evaluation.
The NRC staff recognizes the Committees commitment to safety and appreciates its continued support of the license renewal process.
