Re: Diablo Canyon Nuclear Plant - Protected Species Information & Maps Hi Rich, We did receive the package okay here. It looks like the report is very thorough and accurate on the species that it calls out within the project area. I just wanted to clarify from you what the NRC needs from us at this point. The species list we sent would still generally suffice, as that is just the first step in the process to provide background information for the consultant and Federal agency to consider in the process of preparing a report such as the one you sent. When preparing a species list, we have to consider any potential species that could be affected by the project both directly or indirectly from any possible cause related to operation and maintenance of the nuclear facility (i.e. if there was a melt down, transmission line fire, or something else significant that has any potential to occur, we would have to consider any species that could possibly be affected, within reason), potentially broadening the "project area" some. Please just let me know if you are still needing a revised species list, which might not change much from the one we sent out, but may be able to be refined a bit. At this stage in the project, we generally prefer that the species list remains more broad until surveys are done by the consultant to prove presence/absence and potential to affect. Otherwise, the next step would be for the Federal agency to request formal consultation on the species that may be affected by the proposed project (based on survey info and info provided in the BA for the project). I will be heading out on travel for the next two weeks and will not return until 2-11-11, but will be in contact through email periodically.
