UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON. D.C. 20555*0001 February 28. 2011 Mr. G. T. Powell Vice President, Technical Support and Oversight South Texas Project, Units 1 and 2 STP Nuclear Operating Company P.O. Box 289 VVadsworth, TX 77483

SUBJECT:

SCHEDULE FOR THE CONDUCT OF REVIEVVOF THE SOUTH TEXAS PROJECT, UNITS 1 AND 2, LICENSE RENEVVAL APPLICATION

Dear Mr. Powell:

Enclosed is the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staffs safety and environmental review schedule for the South Texas Project (STP). Units 1 and 2, license renewal application (LRA). This customized schedule has been established to accommodate a timely review of your application along with all other concurrent reviews of applications for license renewal. Due consideration was also given to your staff's input regarding the units' outage schedules and your ability to accommodate the safety and environmental on-site audits, which resulted in later audit dates than anticipated. The NRC staff will follow established review procedures and the enclosed schedule to complete the reviews required by Parts 54 and 51 of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations.

VVe would like to emphasize that the staff will perform a very detailed and thorough review of your LRA. The NRC staff will make every effort to meet the scheduled milestones. To support this effort, your responses to the staffs requests for additional information (RAls) must be complete and provided in a timely manner. You will be afforded an adequate timeframe to respond to each group of RAls (typically 30 days). The timeliness of your responses is necessary to maintain the schedule, and delays could result in revisions to the enclosed established schedule. VVe request that you inform the NRC staff as early as possible should potential delays arise in your support of this schedule.

G. Powell 2 If you have any questions on the established schedule. please contact Mr. John Daily, Senior Project Manager. for the review of the STP LRA by telephone at 301-415-3873 or bye-mail at John.Daily@nrc.gov.
