(Watts Bar Unit 2) )

NRC STAFFS JANUARY 2011 BIMONTHLY REPORT REGARDING THE SCHEDULE FOR REVIEW OF THE WATTS BAR NUMBER 2 LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION The Staff of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (Staff) hereby provides the information the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board (Board) requested in its May 26, 2010 Scheduling Order (Order). In the Order, the Board instructed the Staff to submit a report on July 2, 2010, to be updated on the first Tuesday of every other month thereafter, updating its estimates of the dates on which the final Environmental Impact Statement ("EIS") and the final Safety Evaluation Report ("SER") will be issued, and in addition, to promptly inform the Board of any other developments that could potentially impact the schedule for this proceeding.

The Staff hereby revises its estimate from June of 2011 to November of 2011 for completion of the final supplement to NUREG-0498, Final Environmental Statement Related to the Operation of Watts Bar Nuclear Plant Units Nos. 1 and 2, (December, 1978). As described in the attached letter,1 the revised date is based upon the expected time it will take for Tennessee Valley Authority ("TVA") to provide additional information concerning revised severe 1

Letter from S. Campbell to A. Bhatnagar, "Watts Bar Nuclear Plant, Unit 2 - Potential for Delay in Schedule for Completing Environmental Review," (Jan. 3, 2011)

accident mitigation alternatives ("SAMA"), and for the Staff to review the new SAMA information.

Also as noted in the letter, TVA has been conducting additional studies regarding the potential impact on aquatic species, and those studies will likely be available by the spring of 2011. The Staff intends to review this information as it becomes available.

The Staff also revises its estimated completion date for the final supplement to NUREG-0847, Safety Evaluation Report Related to the Operation of Watts Bar Nuclear Plant, Units 1 and 2, (June 1982). The estimated date is hereby revised from June of 2011 to September of 2011. The revised date reflects additional time needed for the Staff to review fire protection information recently submitted by TVA, and for TVA to provide the Staff with additional information on certain reactor systems.

Respectfully submitted,
