Corrections to NRC SER on Relief Approval for Leak Testing of Waterford Hatch

Kaly, We have noted several statements in the May 18, 2010 ASME Relief Request approval that reflected the precedent relief approval of Watts Bar instead of Waterford. I have attached a markup of the pages with what I would propose as corrected wording from our relief request.

Here is some explanation:

  • Page 5 - Waterford will be opening a preexisting hatch cover in the side of the steel containment for movement of the SGs and head. Watts Bar made two openings in their containment roof.
  • Page 6 - The reference to the 2001 Code through 2003 Addenda is correct. However, our Code of record is 1971 through Summer 1971 Addenda. I would just remove the Code of Record statement.
  • Page 6 - Per our relief we are proposing performing either an MT or a PT of the weld preparation surfaces which will be performed prior to actually installing the repair weld for the hatch cover. Watts Bar performed an exam of the weld back gouge which was performed after initial welding.
  • Page 6 - The Waterford test/accident pressure is 44psig. Watts Bar was 15 psig
  • Page 6 - The reference to only the ASNT CP-189 NDE qualification standard is consistent with our relief request.

If you have questions, call or email me.
