RE: Board Item RE: Buried Pipe Degradation at Salem Art and I talked and we agreed to revisit after next week.

Next week is the PIR sampleon 'the"root and apparent cause for the SLIAFW degra'dation and failures to test. Also next week is the NEI meeting and decision bn* TI.

Not sure if buried pipe action plan has need for gen. comms..

Mike, if you have all information you need can and before you leave, can you draft an OpE comm. with an issue for tracking on the need for generic communications.

Board Item RE: Buried Pipe Degradation at Salem Mike, I will try to feel out my management as to whether they really want to go forward with a generic communication on Salem AFW issue from Region I.

I feel however that buried pipes are already getting a lot of attention from GAO and industry in light of a meeting 9/21 and 9/22 on the issue.

If there is a published list of tritium issues, then there might be worth itto get a list of buried pipe issues to include those that are not radioactive such as Salem AFW.

A summary IN might be worthwhile especially in refreshing on ASME code requirements for safety related piping but only after the meeting with NEI on 9/21 Mike can you issue an "Issue for Tracking" with your OpE comm. document in order to consider Gen.

Comms.? Hopefully what Tim sent you is helpful.

I will see the mood in Region I for developing an INor perhaps NRR ISI group can easily go it.

Harold please discuss during the meeting on a TI or NOT. Harold do you remember what the buried pipe action plan says about gen. comms.

Mike, I don't have anything to add now, but I would like to review what you send to make sure it's factual.

Buried Pipe Degradation at Salem Rich et al, I would like to issue a OpE Communication on buried pipe degradation issues that you guys discovered at Salem, if you could send me any information that you have or would like included, I will try to screen the COMM in tomorrow and have it issued next week.

Of course, prior to issuing it, I will send you a link to a draft copy for your comments prior to issuing it.
