Containment Structure Questions Phillippe -

From the walkdown around containment, and further review here in the Region, several questions occurred to me related to aging management about portions of the containment.

The questions concern the rebar strain gauges installed in the containments (See FSAR figure 3.8-44) to assist in evaluating containment performance during the initial structural integrity test. These strain gauges were abandoned in place, but I was informed that the wires go to the outside of the containment concrete. Where these wires exit the containment concrete, they appear to be covered by a plate, similar to an electric cover plate (but without a slot for the switch).

(1) Describe how the plates (and associated caulking, etc.) are included in the aging management program for containment.

(2) Would there be a path along the strain gauge wires to the rebar that could allow for corrosion from the outside air? If so, has this been evaluated?

(3) Are all the strain gauges wire locations known? Any below grade or subject to water?

Thanks JIM MELFI
