October 5, 2010 Mr. Marvin S. Fertel President and Chief Executive Officer Nuclear Energy Institute 1776 I Street, N.W., Suite 400 Washington, DC 20006
SUBJECT:
SMALL MODULAR REACTORS
Dear Mr. Fertel:
I am responding to your letter dated September 1, 2010, to Chairman Jaczko of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission regarding small modular reactors (SMRs). As you mentioned in your letter, the staff in the Office of New Reactors has been identifying and developing plans to resolve possible issues related to the licensing of SMRs. We are pleased that the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) has been increasing its activities in this area with the formation of the Small Reactor Licensing Task Force and the Small Reactor Executive Oversight Committee. The NRC and NEI staffs met on September 22 and 23, 2010, to begin discussions on several topics, including the position papers your task force is preparing on various generic licensing issues. We look forward to interacting with the task force and executive oversight committee as much as we have with the task force, New Plant Working Group, and New Plant Oversight Committee established for our current design and licensing reviews.
If you have any questions or wish to discuss future interactions, please feel free to contact me or have your staff contact Michael Mayfield at (301) 415-0561, Michael.Mayfield@nrc.gov.
Sincerely, Michael R. Johnson, Director
